As the new school year kicks off at Pensacola State College Charter Academy, students are set to benefit from the expertise and guidance of their newly appointed school counselor, Jessica Howie. Bringing a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to education, Howie is dedicated to ensuring each student’s success and well-being.
Howie, a native of the area and a graduate of Pensacola Junior College, offers invaluable advice to students navigating the academic year. Her tips are designed to help students thrive both academically and personally:
- Be Kind to Yourself: “It’s important to remember that everyone makes mistakes and faces challenges,” Howie advises. “Be gentle with yourself and recognize that setbacks are a natural part of growth.”
- Take It All In: “Embrace every moment,” she encourages. “High school is a unique time in your life, filled with opportunities to learn and grow. Make the most of it.”
- Maintain a Well-Rounded School and Personal Life Balance: Howie emphasizes the importance of balancing academics with personal time. “Finding harmony between your studies and your personal life is crucial. Engage in hobbies, spend time with family and friends, and take care of your mental health.”
- Be Transparent: Jessica urges students to embrace transparency and proactive communication. “Be transparent with your parents about your grades. I like to be proactive, not reactive,” Howie advises. She emphasizes the importance of addressing academic concerns early. Howie encourages students to communicate openly with their professors and utilize available resources. “Don’t wait until you’re struggling to ask for help,” she says. “By being proactive and seeking support early on, you can create a plan that ensures your academic success.” Her message is clear: transparency and early intervention are key to navigating the school year effectively and achieving personal and academic goals.
- Explore Your Options Before You Settle on a Major, and Determine What You Want to Be in Life: “Don’t rush into a decision about your future,” Howie advises. “Take the time to explore different subjects and career paths to find what truly excites and fulfills you.” The Charter Academy students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their future career paths through a multi-faceted capstone project that includes fieldwork, a research paper, an oral presentation, and a portfolio.
- Enjoy Being a Kid: “While it’s important to plan for the future, don’t forget to enjoy your youth,” Howie says. “These years are precious. Have fun, make memories, and cherish this time.”
Howie’s comprehensive background in education, including roles as a high school secretary, special education teacher, and high school counselor, has equipped her with the skills to support students in their academic journeys. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and criminal justice from Troy University, along with a master’s degree in special education and psychology and counseling.
The staff and administration at the Charter Academy are thrilled to have Howie on board. Her dedication to fostering a supportive and enriching environment aligns perfectly with the Charter Academy’s mission to prepare students for post-secondary and career success.
