The Pensacola State College (PSC) Charter Academy speech and debate team is making waves in the competitive speaking world, stacking up victories and solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse of eloquence and argumentation. With unwavering determination, months of dedicated practice, and a passion for public speaking, these students have shown they are a force to be reckoned with—and their journey is just beginning.
It all started in October 2024 at the Incubate Debate Tournament, where PSC Charter Academy made a stunning debut. The team, consisting of Riley Perpantoni, Olivia Underwood, Benjamin Bentley, and Mya Cook, took the competition by storm. Olivia tackled the speech category while Riley, Benjamin, and Mya battled it out in debate rounds. By the tournament’s end, PSC had claimed the highest honors—Riley emerged as the overall debate champion, and Olivia dominated the speech competition, earning the coveted title of overall speech champion.
Olivia’s winning speech was a powerful, deeply personal reflection on the First Amendment’s impact on her life. She traced her family’s history and resilience as African Americans, illustrating how the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution have safeguarded and amplified their rights over generations. Her moving words resonated with judges and audience members alike, securing her a well-deserved victory. Olivia’s win secured her a spot to compete at the Incubate National Meet at the New College of Florida, where she will compete to win the title of National Champion.
Riding the momentum of their early success, the team continued to shine into the new year. In January, Benjamin Bentley took center stage, winning the Incubate Winter Tournament and then delivering another stunning performance at the prestigious American Legion Oratorical Speech Competition. This contest, designed to deepen students’ understanding of the U.S. Constitution, saw Benjamin compete with other students at the charter academy. His speech, a masterful exploration of the human impact of constitutional rights, captivated judges and secured him the top prize. His incubate win has also secured him a spot at the Incubate National Meet hosted at New College of Florida.
Beyond their competitive triumphs, the Charter Academy students also showcased their talents at a special speaking event hosted by the Pensacola Optimist Club. The challenge? To reflect on personal resilience and the power of optimism. But this wasn’t just another competition—it was an opportunity for students to embrace vulnerability, share their personal journeys, and forge deep connections. Thirteen students took the stage after months of perfecting their speeches, delivering heartfelt and inspiring stories. In the end, Makenna took third place, Victoria secured second, and Isaac placed in first. These winners will now advance to the next level of competition, continuing their journey toward excellence.
With an extraordinary season behind them and even greater opportunities ahead, the PSC Charter Academy speech and debate team has proven that words have the power to inspire, influence, and leave a lasting impact. As they set their sights on future competitions, one thing is clear—this is just the beginning of their incredible journey.
